Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Transformation: Key Drivers for Petrovietnam’s Growth in the New Phase
(PetroTimes) – Recognizing science and technology (S&T), innovation, and digital transformation (DT) as fundamental pillars for enhancing productivity, competitiveness, and creating new growth momentum, the Vietnam National Industry – Energy Group (Petrovietnam) is implementing a series of action programs to strongly advance these areas in the coming period.
A Foundation for Value Creation and Operational Efficiency
Throughout its development journey, science and technology have consistently served as a core factor enabling Petrovietnam to gradually master the entire industry–energy value chain, from oil and gas exploration and production to processing, power generation, technical services, and emerging energy sectors.
The application of S&T, innovation, and digital transformation has helped reduce operating costs by 10–15% in several key projects.
Numerous scientific research projects conducted by Petrovietnam have made significant contributions to Vietnam’s energy sector. A notable example is the project titled “Exploration, discovery and efficient exploitation of oil reservoirs in pre-Tertiary granitoid basement formations in the Cuu Long Basin, Vietnam continental shelf.” This work received the Ho Chi Minh Prize in Science and Technology, contributing to Vietnam becoming one of the few countries worldwide successfully extracting oil from basement rock formations..
To date, Petrovietnam stands among the nation’s leading enterprises in scientific and technological achievements, with six Ho Chi Minh Prize-winning projects, four State Prize awards, dozens of VIFOTEC awards, and numerous domestically and internationally recognized patents and technical solutions.
Innovation and technical improvement initiatives have also been widely promoted across the Group. Thousands of initiatives and technical solutions have been applied in production practices, helping reduce costs, improve operational efficiency, and generate substantial economic value. Many innovations in oil and gas production, power plant operation, gas processing, and technical services have saved hundreds of billions of Vietnamese dong in annual production costs.
Science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation have also enabled Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical (BSR) to successfully produce specialized fuels serving national defense and security purposes.
In parallel, Petrovietnam has progressively advanced digital transformation in corporate governance and operations. Big Data analytics systems, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), artificial intelligence (AI) applications, and digital technologies in reservoir management and plant operations are being deployed across multiple subsidiaries, improving governance efficiency, optimizing operations, and enhancing system reliability.
These achievements demonstrate that S&T, innovation, and digital transformation are increasingly becoming decisive factors in improving labor productivity and business performance, contributing significantly to the national economy while ensuring energy security and national defense.
Accelerating Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Transformation
Entering a new development phase, Petrovietnam aims to position science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation as breakthrough drivers of growth.
Under the Group’s S&T, innovation, and digital transformation development program, implementation is closely aligned with goals of improving productivity, strengthening competitiveness, and promoting sustainable growth, ultimately realizing Petrovietnam’s ambition to become a leading industry–energy group in the region.
Petrovietnam has identified a transition in its growth model from one primarily driven by capital and labor to one powered by technology, data, and innovation.
One of the key requirements is to transform the Group’s growth model from being primarily driven by capital and labor to one based on technology, data, and innovation, while simultaneously developing new value chains in emerging energy sectors, advanced materials, and digital technologies.
To achieve these objectives, Petrovietnam is focusing on several key priorities. First, it will continue improving institutional frameworks, mechanisms, and policies to stimulate S&T, innovation, and digital transformation activities. Internal regulations will be reviewed and revised, financial mechanisms for research, development, and technology testing will be enhanced, and policies will be introduced to attract and retain experts, scientists, and high-quality human resources.
Simultaneously, Petrovietnam will accelerate comprehensive digital transformation in governance and operations. The Group will prioritize building data platforms and digital infrastructure, completing ERP systems across the organization, developing a large-scale oil and energy industry database, and expanding cloud computing infrastructure while ensuring information security.

In the production sector, Petrovietnam is oriented toward deploying Smart Factory models across key manufacturing units such as refining and petrochemicals, power, and gas, while strongly applying artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and Digital Twin technologies for predictive maintenance, operational optimization, and enhanced equipment system reliability.
The Group also aims to master strategic technologies supporting the global energy transition, including green hydrogen and ammonia, offshore wind power, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), advanced materials, and bioenergy technologies.
In addition, Petrovietnam plans to establish an innovation ecosystem by reorganizing research and training institutions and founding the Petrovietnam Science, Technology and Innovation Center as a core hub connecting research, training, and technology application throughout the Group.
To ensure adequate resources, Petrovietnam targets allocating a minimum budget equivalent to approximately 2% of consolidated revenue or 10% of consolidated annual profit for S&T, innovation, and digital transformation activities.
Amid the rapid global energy transition, promoting science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation will not only enhance Petrovietnam’s operational efficiency but also open new development opportunities. With clear strategic direction and concrete action programs, Petrovietnam is steadily building a strong technological foundation to achieve breakthroughs in its next development phase, contributing to national energy security and elevating the international standing of Vietnam’s energy enterprises.
